HopDevil: It’s Menacingly Tasty

India Pale Ale            6.7% ABV

Brewed by Victory  Brewing Co. Downington, Pennsylvania

Notes: 68 IBUs (International Bittering Unit). Brewed with Amarillo and Goldings East Kent hops.

Background: Victory Brewing was founded in 1996 in an old Pepperidge Farm bakery. It has since grown to a nationally recognized brewery distributed in more than 30 states. A lot is owed to HopDevil, as it is one of their flagship beers.

Appearance: It pours a hazy orange/amber color. It has a nice off white head.

Aroma: The first smell is that of citrus and hops. You do get a hint of the malts and grains in the background.

Taste: The first taste has been described as a “hop assault on the palate”. Very hop heavy up front. It is very tasty. You do taste a little more of the grain  and malts in this which can be rare for an IPA. Mostly though, you are getting hops, hops, and some more hops.

Overall: I would rate this beer a 95/100. This has become a staple IPA at my house. One of my all-time favorites. Victory is a fantastic brewery and sure knows how to use their hops. This coupled with their Victory StormDevil are two fantastic beers.

Enjoy By IPA: It’s Devastatingly Fresh

Double IPA    9.4% ABV

Brewed by Stone  Brewing Co. Escondido, California

Notes: 88 IBUs (International Bittering Unit). Brewed with Simcoe, Delta, Amarillo, Citra, Cascade, and Motueka hops.

Background: The idea behind this beer from Stone, was to guarantee that the consumer is getting the freshest beer possible. As freshness is a huge component of not only beer in general, but specifically big IPA’s, they brewed and bottled this beer specifically NOT to last. The name “Enjoy by 04.01.13” is the date stores are required to take it off their shelves because they can no longer guarantee its freshness.

Appearance: It pours a medium level gold color. With a very nice white head. It has great head retention throughout.

Aroma: The aroma is very hop heavy up front. It definitely has some citrus and floral notes as well. You do not smell the grains or malts used to brew the beer.

Taste: You get hops from beginning to end with each sip. It also has a certain sweetness to it. You get a taste of some orange and grapefruit in the beer. Taste is almost draft like. A very smooth and very fresh beer.

Overall: I would rate this beer a 98/100. This beer is darn near perfect. It is one of the best, smoothest Double IPAs I have ever had. The idea behind this beer is fantastic, as we have all gone to the store before and grabbed a six pack that was not at its peak freshness. Well, that is not a problem here. Stone has done a great job with the Enjoy by series, and I will definitely be picking up the next one to enjoy before 04.20.13.

Half Court IPA: From Doooowntown…Bloomington



India Pale Ale            6.3% ABV

Brewed by Cutters Brewing Co. Bloomington, Indiana

Background: Cutters is a new, upstart brewery located in Bloomington, IN. They are looking to expand into other areas around Indianapolis. This is one of their 4 year round beers.

Appearance: It pours a deep amber color. This bear has about 1 inch of creamy white head. Solid head retention throughout the drinking process.

Aroma: Sort of a grassy, earthy aroma. Hints of citrus and hops are mixed in.

Taste: Very fruity and citrusy up front. Very different for an IPA. The hops aren’t overly profound in this beer; not too bitter. It drinks pretty smooth, and it has a pretty dry finish.

Overall: I would rate this beer a 70/100.  This is not one of my favorite beers that I have reviewed so far. It is not a bad beer, just not what I was expecting out of an IPA. It was very fruity up front, where as with a typical IPA you get the hops up front. It is more of a hoppy fruit beer than an IPA in my opinion. This is a beer I could enjoy out around the pool, but I would not personally classify it as an IPA.

Cane and Ebel: A Hopped Up Red Rye Ale




Red Rye Ale 7% ABV

Brewed by Two Brothers Brewing Co. Warrenville, Illinois

Notes: 68 IBUs (International Bittering Unit). Brewed with Summit, Columbus, and Simcoe hops. Brewed with Rye Malts which is unique, also brewed with Thai palm sugar. Which is also very unique to this beer.

Background: This is a hopped up Red Rye Ale.  Two Brothers wanted to branch out and try something new, and this is what they came up with.

Appearance: It pours a clear mahogany color. A very smooth red. Solid head retention for the duration of the beer.

Aroma: Not an overly hoppy aroma for a beer with 68 IBUS. You definitely can smell the sweetness of the Thai palm sugar. Also, a slight citrus scent.  

Taste: As I said, this is a hopped up red rye beer. So you get a lot of flavors of other red beers with an extra hop kick. A very smooth, sweet beer. You get the hop taste up front, then it progresses to a citrusy rye flavor, finishing off smooth and sweet.

Overall: I would rate this beer an 88/100. This is a great beer in a pretty limited category. I wish more breweries would do hopped up Reds. Very smooth beer for the higher IBU rating. The 7% ABV is masked pretty well. Definitely a beer everyone should try at least once.

Breckenridge 471 Double IPA: Hoppy? Brother, 471 IPA Redefines Hoppy



Double IPA 9.2% ABV

Brewed by Breckenridge Brewery, Denver, Colorado

Notes: 70 IBUs (International Bittering Unit). Brewed with Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, Fuggles hops.

Background: 471 is a small batch, limited edition ale that was created by the Breckenridge 
Brewmaster to separate the weak from the strong.

Appearance: It pours a clear copper color with about a ¼ inch of head. Pretty good head retention throughout the beer.  

Aroma: Pretty strong hop aroma. You get a hint of orange citrus in the scent. Overall a pretty balanced aroma.

Taste: You get a huge kick of hop up front. After the original hoppiness, you get a pretty sweet finish. There is also a hint of citrus. Overall a pretty well balanced flavor. Very smooth for the high ABV and IBU.

Overall: I would rate this beer an 80/100. It’s a pretty good beer overall. Very smooth and sweet to mask the high ABV. At first sample it’s hard to tell it is a Double IPA. I would drink it again, however, it would not be my first choice in Double IPA’s.

Left Handed Fade to Black: WELCOME TO FADE TO BLACK VOLUME 4



Rocky Mountain Black Ale 6.5%

Brewed by Left Handed Brewery, Longmont, Colorado

Notes: 64 IBUs (International Bittering Unit). Brewed with Centennial and Columbus hops.

Background: Fade to Black Volume 4 is a seasonal created for the time where light fades away. This winter seasonal, is a hoppy Black Ale.

Appearance: It pours a pitch black color with about a half inch of a caramel white head. Fantastic head retention for this beer.  

Aroma: Strong hop profile. Hints of chocolate. Pretty strong malt scent.

Taste: Very hoppy up front. The hops are very pronounced. They stay on the tongue for quite some time. Tastes much like a regular IPA up front. The finish is very smooth, almost like a Chocolate Stout. 
  
Overall: I would rate this beer an 85/100. This is definitely a beer I would drink again. It is much hoppier than I originally expected. This is a good, well balanced beer. If you are a stout drinker trying to get into IPAs or vice versa, this is a great beer for you.

Alpha King: The King of Pale Ales




American Pale Ale    6.66% ABV

Brewed by Three Floyds Brewing Co. Munster, Indiana

Notes: 66 IBUs (International Bittering Unit). Brewed with Centennial, Cascade, and Warrior hops.

Background: This is Three Floyd’s flagship beer. They label  it as a BIG American Pale Ale.

Appearance: It pours a deep amber color. It has a solid 1 inch of creamy white head.

Aroma: Pretty strong hop aroma. Hints of citrus and floral aromas.

Taste: Alpha King is a fantastic Pale Ale. It has a crisp, hoppy flavor. Pretty hoppy taste as far as Pale Ales go. Very smooth all around. If you are a hophead you will definitely enjoy this beer. The hops, malt, and citrus blends very well together.

Overall: I would rate this beer a 95/100. This is hands down one of my favorite beers, if I see it on tap, I order it. Not your typical Pale Ale as there is a much higher hop flavor than expected. Three Floyd’s is one of the best breweries around, and there aren't many better beers to hang your hat on than Alpha King.

Ranger IPA: To protect. To pour. To partake.



India Pale Ale            6.5% ABV

Brewed by New Belgium Brewing Fort Collins, Colorado

Notes: 70 IBUs (International Bittering Unit). Ranger IPA is brewed with pale and dark caramel malts. It is then hopped with Cascade, Chinook, and Simcoe hops. Cascade hops are added again for a huge dry hop flavor.

Background: New Belgium brewery is a pretty well-known brewery across the country. With Fat Tire as a flagship beer, people started asking for more.  Well, for all the, as New Belgium calls them, “hopinistas” out there you are in luck. They bring us Ranger IPA. It was first brewed in February 2010, and has become so popular that it has become one of the few craft beers to be canned.

Appearance: This beer has a clear amber color to it. With a nice 1 inch white head.

Aroma: Strong hop aroma, as is typical with an IPA. Get an especially strong aroma of the Simcoe and Chinook hops.

Taste: Ranger has a pretty crisp, refreshing flavor to it. You get an abundance of hops in your first sip. It isn't overly heavy, but you can definitely tell you are drinking a beer. The bitterness is about average as far as IPA’s go. Pretty well balanced malt and hop flavor.

Overall: I would rate this around an 88/100. This  IPA didn't top the charts, but it is definitely good. It drinks smoother than 6.5% abv would suggest. The best part about it is it is fairly abundant. You can get it pretty much anywhere, which has made it become one of the staple IPA’s in my arsenal.

Gumballhead: An American Wheat Beer That Doesn’t Suck!



American Pale Wheat Ale 5.40% ABV

Brewed by Three Floyds Brewing Co. Munster, Indiana

Notes: 35 IBUs (International Bittering Unit). Gumballhead is brewed with American red wheat and Amarillo Hops.

Background: Gumballhead is named after the underground comic book cat created by Rob Syers.
It started off as a summer seasonal beer, but due to the popularity turned into a year round product. This has become one of the staple beers for the 3 Floyds Brewery.

Appearance: Pours out of the bottle a clear yellow gold

Aroma: Up front Citrus scent with wheat mixed in. Smells much hoppier than a typical Wheat Ale.

Taste: First sip you taste a lot of citrus and wheat up front. After the swallow you get a lot more of the bitterness from the hops than you might expect from a Wheat Ale. It is a smooth refreshing taste, that I could enjoy drinking poolside or in a bar.

Overall: I would rate this 90/100.  With the Citrus flavor and the fairly low bitterness, it makes for a pretty refreshing beer. It is a little more hoppy/bitter than a typical Wheat Ale, but not as hoppy as an IPA. Overall this is a great beer that you could drink anywhere.

Lager...In A Can?


Samuel Adams, a brand of The Boston Beer Co., Boston, announced that for the first time it plans to offer Samuel Adams Boston Lager in a can that is designed to closely match the experience of drinking beer from a glass, the company says. The “Sam Can,” which is the result of two years of ergonomic and sensory research and testing, will hit shelves in early summer 2013, just in time for outdoor drinking occasions.

“The debate over bottles vs. cans has been a sticking point for brewers in the craft beer community for years,” said Jim Koch, founder and brewer of Samuel Adams, in a statement. “In the past, I had my doubts about putting Sam Adams in a can because I wasn’t convinced that Boston Lager would taste as good as it does from a bottle, but cans have changed, and I believe we’ve designed a can that provides a slight but noticeably better drinking experience than the standard beer can.”
Koch and the other brewers at Samuel Adams first worked with can manufacturer Ball Corp., Broomfield, Colo., to understand can design and technology and how to package premium beer in cans. The brewers then worked with a design team at IDEO, a global design firm based in Palo Alto, Calif., and enlisted the help of sensory expert Roy Desrochers of GEI Consultants, Libertyville, Ill. With Desrochers’ help, Koch studied every aspect of the new can, from how it could potentially impact the flavor of Samuel Adams’ flagship Boston Lager to the ergonomics of how the beer flows from the can and hits the taste receptors on a consumer’s tongue.

“I worked with [Koch] and the other brewers at Sam Adams on an ergonomic and flavor study to understand the benefits of the new can,” Desrochers said in a statement. “The flared lip and wider top of the new Sam Can work in concert to deliver the beer in a way that makes the flavor closer to drinking out of a glass. Although subtle, this can delivers a more pronounced, more balanced flavor experience — something that was very important to the brewers. The extended lip of the can also creates a smoother, more comfortable overall drinking experience.”

While using the new can, drinkers should notice enhanced flavors and a more comfortable experience, the company says. The position of the can opening and wider lid naturally open up the mouth, allowing for more air flow, and positions the drinker’s nose closer to the hop aromas of the beer, it says. Drinkers also will note that the extended, curved lip of the can delivers the beer to the front of the palate to maximize the early enjoyment of the malt sweetness, it adds.

Koch’s end goal in developing a new can is to provide drinkers with the best possible Boston Lager drinking experience when they prefer the convenience of a can without compromising the taste of the Boston Lager, the company says.

“The new Sam Can required a million dollar investment in special equipment tooling along with time, research and testing,” Koch explained in a statement. “This new can will also cost more than the standard can to produce. It may seem a little crazy to make that kind of investment, but we felt the slight improvement in the drinking experience was worth the expense. We made decisions based on the beer, not on the bottom line. We’ve done tastings here at the brewery with Sam Adams drinkers and our experts, and now we’re proud to launch Samuel Adams Boston Lager in cans. We have a vessel that gives our drinkers the best-tasting Samuel Adams in a can.”

Samuel Adams Boston Lager will be available in 12-packs of cans nationwide beginning this summer with a suggested retail price between $14.99 and $17.99.

This is a follow up on a previous spotlight post on VICE.

We are fortunate to have had a few bottles of ADD-VICE sent for tasting. ADD-VICE, previously branded as VICE Unlimited, was a spirit born out of necessity. Sex On Fire

½ shot ADD-VICE Caramel

Splash of orange juice

¼ shot absinthe

¼ shot grenadine

Shake ADD-VICE and orange juice over ice and strain into glass. Then let grenadine settle to bottom and layer absinthe on top.


Vice Kiss & Tell

1 double espresso

1 shot Kaluha

1 shot ADD-VICE Caramel

50ml fresh cream

Mix first two ingredients over ice. Pour into glass. Mix last two ingredients over ice and layer on top. Garnish with chocolate shavings.

 

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait


When Ireland is mention, when does Guinness not come to mind?

Diageo describes Guinness Draught as “Swirling clouds tumble as the storm begins to calm, settle, breathe in the moment, then break through the smooth, light head to the bittersweet reward. Unmistakably Guinness beer, stout, or draught, from the first velvet sip to the last, lingering drop. And every deep-dark satisfying mouthful in between. Pure beauty. Pure Guinness.

On a visit to Ireland, Guinness was gracious enough to open the doors to Ace’s Place. We were greeted buy a welcoming team leader, Helen. She introduced us to our guide Stephen McGuinness. We began our tour with a delectable meal at Gilroy’s. Gilroy’s serves traditional Irish food in a bistro setting…of course with the main ingredient, Guinness. While dining, you can see the original advertisements of the Guinness Zookeeper.

Our tour continues through the atrium, the ground floor of a 7 story pint glass. Fun fact, if you were able to fill the building with Guinness, it would take 14.3 million pints. While in the atrium, feast your eyes on the 9000 year lease that Arthur Guinness signed on the St. James’s Gate Brewery. You get taken through a sensual journey on the craft of brewing. Learn how water, barley, hops, and yeast gets combined to make the ruby red deliciousness…another fun fact, Guinness is not black, hold it up to the light.

Continuing on, discover the history of cooperage and transportation. See how the cooper created the wooden barrels that transported the brew to all those around the world. We then saw the history in advertising. Old labels, bottles, and merchandising line cases throughout the floor. Get a chance to learn how the drink got a “World Record” book…find that fun fact out for yourself.

Your tour ends with two choices: Grab a drink at the world famous Gravity Bar or learn how to pour the perfect pint at the Guinness Academy. Get a 360 degree view from the highest point in Dublin at the Gravity Bar, great way to end your trip. If you choose the Guinness Academy, take a class in pouring and become a certified Perfect Pint pourer.

If time allows, check the computers to see if you had any relatives that worked at the factory. Guinness keeps an archive of all employees to ever work. Don’t forget the gift shop. Floor to ceiling gear for every Guinness enthusiast.

There is no way our review can do the Storehouse justice. This is venue is a must see to anyone traveling to Dublin. Come early and stay long. Come for the Guinness and stay for the hospitality. Don’t forget, Guinness is Good for You.

Not Missing The Mark w/ *Update*


In response to rapidly increasing demand for bourbon, Maker's Mark announced it is reducing the amount of alcohol in the spirit to keep pace with consumer demand.

In an email to its best customers, representatives of the brand said the entire bourbon category is "exploding" and demand for Maker's Mark is growing even faster. Some customers have even reported empty shelves in their local stores, it said.

After looking at "all possible solutions," the total alcohol by volume of Maker's Mark is being reduced by 3 percent. Representatives said the change will allow it to maintain the same taste while making sure there's "enough Maker's Mark to go around." It's working to expand its distillery and production capacity, too.

Maker's Mark, made by Deerfield-based Beam Inc., said it's done extensive testing to ensure the same taste. It says bourbon drinkers couldn't tell the difference. It also underscored the fact that nothing else in the production process has changed.

"In other words, we've made sure we didn't screw up your whisky," the note said.
Rob Samuels, chief operating officer and grandson of Maker's Mark Founder Bill Samuels, Sr., said this is a permanent decision that won’t be reversed when demand for bourbon slows down. Samuels said that bourbon has gone from the slowest growing spirits category to the fastest over the last 18 months, driven by growth overseas and demand from younger drinkers. An average bottle of Maker’s Mark takes six and half years to produce from start to finish, and since the company doesn’t buy or trade whiskey, it’s been impossible to keep up.

Beam is the country's second-largest spirits company by volume. It also makes Jim Beam, Sauza tequila and Pinnacle vodka. It's still dwarfed by industry-leading Diageo, the London-based maker of Smirnoff, Tanqueray, Captain Morgan and Johnnie Walker.
It's a tough time to take a risk with one of its oldest and most popular brands. Beam has promised that 25 percent of sales will come from new products, a difficult goal to attain but a critical one for investor confidence.The move met some backlash on social media sites, where some said they would boycott the bourbon if the company went ahead with its plans.
Many also complained that they'd rather see an increase in its price than a decrease in the alcohol. But observers say that by raising the price, Beam would have hurt itself by positioning Maker's Mark to compete against its own higher end brands like Basil Hayden's.

Since our post on 2/11/13, Maker's Mark released a statement today 2/17/13:

You spoke. We listened. 

Dear Friends,

Since we announced our decision last week to reduce the alcohol content (ABV) of Maker’s Mark in response to supply constraints, we have heard many concerns and questions from our ambassadors and brand fans. We’re humbled by your overwhelming response and passion for Maker’s Mark. While we thought we were doing what’s right, this is your brand – and you told us in large numbers to change our decision.

You spoke. We listened. And we’re sincerely sorry we let you down.

So effective immediately, we are reversing our decision to lower the ABV of Maker’s Mark, and resuming production at 45% alcohol by volume (90 proof). Just like we’ve made it since the very beginning.

The unanticipated dramatic growth rate of Maker’s Mark is a good problem to have, and we appreciate some of you telling us you’d even put up with occasional shortages. We promise we'll deal with them as best we can, as we work to expand capacity at the distillery.

Your trust, loyalty and passion are what’s most important. We realize we can’t lose sight of that. Thanks for your honesty and for reminding us what makes Maker’s Mark, and its fans, so special.

We’ll set about getting back to bottling the handcrafted bourbon that our father/grandfather, Bill Samuels, Sr. created. Same recipe. Same production process. Same product.

As always, we will continue to let you know first about developments at the distillery. In the meantime please keep telling us what’s on your mind and come down and visit us at the distillery. It means a lot to us.
